Mayor Byron W. Brown issued a reminder to City residents that on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, neighborhoods citywide are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “39th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the City of Buffalo, will involve over 16,400 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world.
Mayor Brown stated, “National Night Out is a time to celebrate the partnership between the Buffalo Police Department and all of the members of the community who help to make us safer and stronger. While we’ve had our share of recent challenges, including the mass shooting at the Tops on Jefferson that claimed the lives of ten precious people and wounded three others, National Night Out is a time to recognize the many good things that are happening, too, and a reminder that we still have a lot to do to fight crime and keep safe. Let’s continue to work together, and when we return next year and the year after that, let’s celebrate that we’ve come even farther, together.”
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia stated, “National Night Out 2022 will be a special evening for the Buffalo community as we come together to support one another in a continued effort to make our neighborhoods even safer, more caring places to live. The Buffalo Police Department works very hard every day to build positive relationships with our neighbors, and while we have more to do, I look forward to celebrating our progress on National Night Out.”
Debbie Lombardo, President of the Board of Block Clubs of Buffalo & Erie County, stated, “The Board of Block Clubs is looking forward to our block clubs getting together to celebrate each other and their neighborhoods on National Night Out 2022. What a great way to get to know your neighbors and community police officers, while lifting up our entire community by learning from each other.”
As part of National Night Out festivities in Buffalo, Mayor Brown, Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, Fire Commissioner William Renaldo, Chief Service Officer Director Oswaldo Mestre, representatives of the Police Athletic League of Buffalo, and staffers of the Division of Citizen Services and other city representatives will make stops at a number of Block Club gatherings throughout the evening. City staffers will distribute flyers that highlight on-going public safety and anti-crime initiatives. There will also be fun giveaways for Buffalo’s youngest residents, including bike helmets, Child ID Kits, Junior Police Badges, and National Night Out coloring books about city departments and services.
National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin said, “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety, and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police- community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On NNO, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in Giving Crime & Drugs A Going Away Party.”
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation, in local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhood are organized and fighting back.
