Boulder recently issued the following announcement.
Each year, the City of Boulder provides support to organizations that recognize Immigrant Heritage Month through events and celebrations that honor the immigrants who have shaped the city for generations.
This year, the city’s Human Relations Commission and Office of Arts and Culture have provided funding for several community events to celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month 2022.
The events celebrate the successful engagement of immigrants into the civic, economic and cultural life of the Boulder community. Admission to all events is free and open to the public, including:
- June 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Spanish and 6 to 8 p.m. in English at the Dairy Arts Center: UndocuAmerica Monologues. Motus Theater presents a special performance recognizing the 10-year anniversary of the establishment of DACA through powerful personal stories of DACA leaders Victor Galvan, Kiara Chavez, Armando Peniche, Laura Peniche, Irving Reza, musical responses by acclaimed singer-songwriter Carlos Heredia, and visual art by muralist Edica Pacha.
- June 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. and June 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 1915 Broadway, Boulder CO 80301: Ellis Island Stories. This event is based on the oral history project at the Statue of Liberty National Monument/Ellis Island National Immigration Museum. The Boulder cast includes local actors: Sally Knudsen, Art Razo, Raouf Zaidan, and Carrie Hamilton. Ms. Hamilton performed the show at Ellis Island in the original cast and now lives in the area. The 40-minute show will be followed by a curated panel discussion about “Immigration: Now and Then.”
- June 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Avalon Ballroom: This event will feature performances, Nyakurut and other traditional forms of dance, music, and food of the Didinga and Laarim tribe of Eastern Equatoria state, Republic of South Sudan. The event will provide an opportunity to recognize the essential sense of humanity and the value of sharing stories through songs, dancing, traditional dressing, riddle, and arts of body movement.
