Auburn University graduate Jordan Beam has received a Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship, which will be applied toward her first year of medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine.
A native of Hoover, Alabama, Beam was a spring 2022 Auburn Honors College graduate with a degree in biomedical sciences in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, and a minor in Spanish in the College of Liberal Arts.
Beam held leadership roles in a variety of clubs and committees, including Auburn Dance Marathon, Honors College Peer Academic Coaches and Alpha Gamma Delta and as a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a national health preprofessional honor society.
“Auburn cultivates a family atmosphere and encourages you to make smaller, stronger group bonds within individual organizations,” said Beam. “Each club I was involved in as an undergrad allowed me to develop some very close friendships and make memories that I will cherish indefinitely. I learned how to be a part of a team and work together to deal with conflicts as they arise.”
Beam said her COSAM and Honors College classes provided her with a supportive, friendly learning environment that prepared her for the upcoming challenges of medical school.
Each year, the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards 51 fellowships of $5,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the society-wide awards.
Ed Thomas, COSAM interim dean, praised Beam’s earning of the honor.
“I am proud that Jordan Beam is the recipient of this prestigious national fellowship,” Thomas said. “She joins a team of outstanding students that are part of Phi Kappa Phi.”
Honors College Director Tiffany Sippial also congratulated Beam.
“The Honors College is so proud of Jordan,” Sippial said. “From her service as an Honors academic coach to her work with Project Horseshoe Farm, she has distinguished herself in so many ways. This award is not only very prestigious, but it is also richly deserved.”
