Yasmine Hall, a sophomore majoring in microbiology in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, presented her research on bottlenose dolphins at the Gulf Estuarine Research Society Biennial Meeting, or GERS, Oct. 27-29.

The meeting took place at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Hall’s research presentation focused on observing the microorganisms that make up the dolphin skin microbiome to see how it could support future sampling and research efforts.

“Being able to present at GERS was an amazing opportunity, and I was able to soak up an abundance of information from so many knowledgeable people,” said Hall.

Last spring, Hall was accepted into the 2022 Dauphin Island Sea Lab Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, or DISL REU, funded by the National Science Foundation. From May 30 to Aug. 5, she completed the prestigious research program in Dauphin Island, gaining practical knowledge in research, lab and presentation skills while experiencing a summer of a lifetime.
